How to Care for Carbon Steel Golf Gear (and Keep It Rust-Free)
Carbon steel is raw. Real. Powerful. But like all legends, it needs a little respect.
At Kraken Golf, we use carbon steel in some of our most badass designs — for its strength, machining precision, and old-school soul. But there’s one thing you’ve got to know:
Carbon steel will rust if you treat it like stainless.
That’s not a flaw. It’s character. And with the right care, that character only gets better with age.
🧪 What Is Carbon Steel (and Why It Rusts)
Carbon steel is tough and pure — no fancy alloys, just iron and carbon. That simplicity makes it machinable and responsive, but it also means it can oxidize (rust) when exposed to moisture, humidity, or salty air.
Good news: with a little maintenance, carbon steel can develop a beautiful dark patina instead of red rust. It’s what collectors want.
🧽 Daily Care Tips for Carbon Steel
1. Dry It Down After Use
If you’re playing in the rain or sweating it out on a humid summer day, wipe your marker, pitch tool or putter down after every round with a clean towel or microfiber.
Moisture is the enemy. Even fingerprints can accelerate rusting.
2. Keep It Oiled (Lightly)
A light coat of oil goes a long way. Use:
- Gun oil
- WD-40
- Mineral oil
- Even a few drops of olive oil in a pinch
- or my favorite Putter Butter
Rub it on with a cloth or paper towel, then wipe off the excess. Do this after heavy use or once a month if it’s in storage.
3. Store It Right
Don’t leave your carbon steel gear in a damp garage, steamy bathroom, or wet golf bag.
- Store it in a dry drawer or pouch
- Use silica gel packs or desiccant packs in your gear bag
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and high humidity zones
Bonus tip: Kraken packaging often comes with eva foam inserts — they’re perfect for long-term storage.
🛠️ What If Rust Already Appeared?
Caught some red spots? No stress. Here's how to fix it:
✅ For Light Surface Rust:
- Depending on finish (ceratinaly reach out first if you have questions!!!) Use a soft brass brush, Scotch-Brite pad, or 0000 steel wool
- Lightly scrub with oil applied
- Wipe clean and re-oil
- Keep in mind some special finishes like mirror, high polish or satin glass bead finishes can be destroyed with the above... so when in doubt reach out first so we can cover options!
⚠️ For Heavier Rust:
- Use Bar Keeper’s Friend or a baking soda + water paste
- Apply with a soft toothbrush, rinse, dry, and re-oil
- Again... please keep in mind some special finishes like mirror, high polish or satin glass bead finishes can be destroyed with the above... so when in doubt reach out first so we can cover options!
Note: This may slightly change the finish — so go slow and don’t overdo it. Sometimes a little patina adds soul.
🔥 Pro Tip: Embrace the Patina
The beauty of carbon steel is in its evolution. Over time, it’ll develop a darker, moodier tone — a natural patina that tells a story.
That’s not rust. That’s relic status.
💬 Final Word
Carbon steel isn’t for everyone. But for those who appreciate raw materials and handcrafted gear, it’s a bond.
Treat your carbon steel markers, pitch tools, or putters right — and they’ll outlive your 7-iron.
